1.    What are your beliefs about how people learn best?
I believe people learn best by when given proper instructions, demonstration, and adequate practice. If you are learning how to read then you must practice your reading skills. If you are learning how to play an instrument then you must practice. When people are able to practice a skill they can learn it. I believe in the saying “Each One, Teach One”.  Meaning if someone has mastered a skill they should be able to teach someone else how to do the skill. I also believe people learn best when the learning is catered to their learning style. I have used the VARK Assessment with my students to understand their learning styles. There are many other assessments that can be used to determine how students learn.
2.    What is the purpose of learning theory in educational technology?
I think educational technology provides the tools to deliver the many different instructional strategies. Educational Technology can enhance a student’s learning experience. Learning theory is centered on the observation of changes in performance. There are a set of constructs that link the changes in performance (Driscoll, 2005). Educational Technology can be used to gather performance data that would provide the answers to the different questions about the learning process. This question can be answered in many different ways. The beauty of learning is seeing the diversity in how questions such as this can be answered.
Here are a couple other views about the purpose of learning theory in educational technology.

  1. Tina,

I really enjoyed reading your post. I agree with your statements about how important practice is in the learning process. I also appreciate you including the link to the vark assessment. I too agree strongly that it is important to accommodate the learning styles of our students when teaching. Thank you very much for this resource.

  2. When you test your students learning styles, how do you incorporate that information into your teaching? I definitely agree that learning can be enhanced by practice, but I do think that not all people need practice to learn all information. Some things can be read once and memorized depending on the interest of the learner.

  3. Hello Tina,
I completely agree with you about how learners learn best, but I also feel that people need to have hands-on experiences so that they are able to "see" and "feel" what they are required to know to meet standards.

  4. @mathtechprescott I usually try to use each area (audio, visual, written, hands-on) during instruction. This information also helps when I am working with the students one-on-one. I also let students submit assignments based on their learning styles. I do realize that people learn in different ways. I know that some people can learn something by being shown once or by reading the instructions once. I just listed some ways I believe people learn best. Thanks for your feedback.

  5. @ Amanda I agree with you about the hands-on experiences. Many of my assignments consists of projects that require students tot complete hands-on tasks to learn a concept. Thanks for your response!
