Module 5: New Technologies

New Technologies Blog

Prior to becoming a teacher I worked in the same school district as a Technology Specialist. While serving in my position as a technology specialist I encountered several teachers that were resisted to using new technology in the classroom. I remember a teacher that felt she didn’t have to use technology in her class because she had taught the same way for many years with great results. At the time this teacher was near retirement and had an “if it ain’t broke then don’t try to fix it” attitude. The majority of her student successfully passed the End of Course Test for her class so she was satisfied.
I would usually try to start out with simple technology enhancements such as videos relating to the course. I would demonstrate how to incorporate the technology in a lesson. Then I would allow the teacher to practice so he/she could see how easy the task is. In the case of the teacher above, I would explain that she could possibly improve her current scores by using technology to reach those students that didn’t do well on the test. I would show her online remediation tools that would help students that needed the extra practice. I would also show the teacher data that supports the use of technology in the classroom. I would do whatever it takes to motivate the teacher to use the technology with her students.
